Fiction
Below, you'll find links to my stories published here and elsewhere on the internet.
Excerpts from "Facsimile"
My second novel, Facsimile, is now available through Amazon.com. Set in the near-future, Facsimile explores the nature of identity and social networking in a digital age. Chapter 1 is posted at Threat Quality Press.

Excerpts from "For Love of Children"
In December 2009, I self-published my first novel, "For Love of Children." Part fantasy, part fairytale, and part undefinable, the novel follows a cast of characters including Santa Claus, Mother Goose, and the Tooth Fairy during the aftermath of World War II. There are currently two excerpts posted here, and a third available on Threat Quality Press.

Short Stories
Troll Killers (Hosted at The 22 Magazine)
A short, dark fantasy story, available in the first volume of The 22 Magazine, a new online publication. If you're interested, you can also find a short interview I did here.
The Worst Assassin in Kalbrin
Also available in the collection Tending the Fire
This is a fantasy story I started writing, put down for a while, then completely forgot about. I came across it a few years later and had no idea where I was originally going to go with it. At the same time, I kind of loved the premise, which is precisely what the title implies. I have no idea if this was the story I originally intended to write or not, but I like how it ended up.

The Window (Hosted at Threat Quality Press)
Here's a short piece of irreverent science fiction that's being hosted by Threat Quality Press.
The Goblin Prince
Also available in the collection Tending the Fire
This one is sort of an alternate Grimm's fairy tale. I wrote a version of this back in 2003, forgot about it for four years, then stumbled across it a few years ago and completely rewrote it. This is one of my favorites, but it breaks just about every rule in modern fantasy.

Upgrade
Here's a little science fiction dealing with that ever blurring line between man and machine. In no way is this revolutionary, but I kind of like it regardless. This originally appeared in the Winter 05/06 issue of Canon Magazine. Click above to read it online or, if you'd prefer a prettier version, it's still available for free as a .pdf on Canon's website).
Beneath the Gate (Hosted at Threat Quality Press)
This is a short piece - less than two thousand words - which is hosted at Threat Quality Press, a blog you should check out regardless. "Beneath the Gate" is one of those stories that falls in the cracks between genres. I suppose it's more fantasy than anything else, but that's not saying much: "fantasy" is basically a synonym for "fiction."
Writing Contests
Ain't It Cool News: Lord of the Rings Radio City Music Hall Score Extravaganza
Sept 2009
This contest challenged participants to describe how they would combat the Balrog encountered in Fellowship of the Ring. Information about the contest is available here. I posted my entry, which took second place, in The Middle Room.
Hayden's Ferry Review Blog Columbus Day Contest
Sept 2008
I was the fourth runner up in a contest run on the Hayden's Ferry Review blog. Submissions had to be 200 - 300 words, tied to Columbus Day, and begin with the sentence, "It all started with the worst batch of peach preserve you can imagine and the first cigarette I ever tasted, though regrettably not the last." My entry can be found here.
